Read Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Time has done its thing, left me reeling. It is a privlege. Know that it is good to work. It has a lot to offer a writer. No one could accuse Karr of blindness to literary tradition. Uelland has their own truth to tell.

I first read this book when I was 13, so I can’t vouch for how useful it might be to an adult reader. For example, be passionate about your subject. It is an energizing read, written in simple, clear, vivacious prose by a woman without a shred of pomposity but with tou, passionate beliefs about art and individualism, a la William Blake.

To read them in parallel is to marvel at the extent to wabt creativity talk has changed very little in more than half a century, sociocultural revolutions notwithstanding. I read many books about creative people’s lives, hoping to glean some knowledge and inspiration.

Only if you say what you truly mean, is what you write going to be a success.

They are always doing secondary and menial things that do not require all their gifts and ability for others and never anything for themselves. It’s always your own voice that comes out the best in whatever you do. Every student should read this book because it helps to understand that there wtite so much more to writing than the grammar, rules, and formats the English teachers forced into our heads.
