DOLLAR BAHU: A CRITICAL STUDY. This chapter deals with the critical analysis of Sudha Murty‟s first novel Dollar Bahu that was first published by East West. Sudha Murty’s Dollar Bahu is a rather sweet, if overly moralistic, novella that explores the age-old notion that the grass is not always greener on. My reading of Sudha Murty was intermittent. It all changed when a friend ‘flipkart’ ed a copy of her latest book, ‘The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk’.

The reader is taken by surprise and elated with the turn of events when the dollar note does not evoke the same passion in Gouramma when it falls from her suitcase down to the ground at her feet. The simplicity of the language was agreeable but the plot bxhu trite. The lure of the dollar exacts a heavy price.
Muthy Rupee Bahu Vinutha cannot measure upto the dollar bahu Jamuna as her monetary value is more. Vinuta slowly loses her peace of mind and health. Dollar Bahu is a beautifully crafted dolar about a conflict of a family based around wealth differences. As many Gouramma that many Jamuna.
She regretted her own attitude towards Vinuta. The story is about two daughters-in-law of a family, one from America and the other one from India. Sep 27, Dollra Thapliyal rated it it was amazing. The characters come into the story very quickly one behind the other and leave as quickly as they entered.
Is it all milk and honey without any drawbacks? On top sudba it, Gouramma and Surabhi took out their anger on Vinu — she is blamed as the one creating a ruckus in the family.

The characters of Vinutha and Girish are lovingly filled up with a few sentences here and there which takes the reader to the very core of their essence as in Girish relishes the quality of self-respect in Vinutha, offers to buy her saree and mangalsutra without asking for dowry or saddening her by selling her house to treat the guests to a lavish wedding feast.
He describes her voice as golden, dulcet, divine, sweet as honey. Says Sunil, “This is a very important aspect of the serial and another is that we have depicted that the communities have plenty in common and work very closely, socialise, share family happenings and everything else in America.
After Chandru and Jamuna get a child, Gouramma decides to go to America to be with them. Girish the second, is a bank clerk and married to Vinuta, a sweet young woman who works hard day and night and never fails to carry out her household duties and her duties to her mother-in-law.
The characters in this novel add spice and make it different. How about both of them? Sudha Murty, one of my favorite writer, not one of, but the most favorite you can say.

She makes some friends of the friends of Chandru mufthy her conversations with them on their experiences open her mind to progressive thinking. There isn’t much more to say about this book.
Dollar Bahu by Sudha Murty. With such an ordinary story at hand, the author could have afforded to break the stereotyped characters. Dollar Bahu portrays the struggle of a middle-class family to graduate into an upper-class one through their son in the USA.

I was so desperate for a twist in the tale, in a bold sort of way, that I continued reading but all I got in the end was that the dollar — not greed, not inconsideration, not lack of self-respect or d I was looking forward to this book but my enthusiasm dampened just 30 pages into the story.
