DOLLAR BAHU: A CRITICAL STUDY. This chapter deals with the critical analysis of Sudha Murty‟s first novel Dollar Bahu that was first published by East West. Sudha Murty’s Dollar Bahu is a rather sweet, if overly moralistic, novella that explores the age-old notion that the grass is not always greener on. My reading of Sudha Murty was intermittent. It all changed when a friend ‘flipkart’ ed a copy of her latest book, ‘The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk’.

A story of how money corrupts the way people look at one another and how it can almost tear a family apart Vinuta marries Girish, a bank clerk, and starts living with his family in Bangalore. With Saurabhi engaged to a man named Suresh, Gouramma had to plan a date for their wedding.
Sudha Murty was born in in Shiggaon in north Karnataka. The characters were very lifelike and this seems to be the story of every Indian house where the child who earns more is treated better then the one who earns comparatively less.
And the land of the dollar. She realizes what it is to be on the otherside of the fence when the white lady in the bus changes her seat when Gouri sits next to her, just like how Gouri had done when a sweeper woman had sat next to her.
By the time Gouramma is back in Indiashe realises that Vinu, Girish and their son had gone to Dharwad. Very well written book. Vinuta slowly loses her peace of mind and health.

A vicious mother-in-law, a submissive daughter-in-law with hints of spineless men scattered all over the plot were the recipe for the story. Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email. She [Gouramma] would dream about the Dollar, that magic green currency, which could change her house and fulfil her dreams.
This book sheds some real light onto how one is hypnotized seeing the shine of wealth, but in fact, it is not everything required for a family to be satisfied and contended. She makes some friends of the friends of Chandru and her conversations with them on their experiences open her mind to progressive thinking. However, when she lives a year or so in America, she realises that the Indians living there face the same problems and challenges as those of living in India. Gouramma is everywhere in India and there is nothing wrong in that. Dollar Bahu seems to be a typical daily soap story and therefore it was aired as a television series. In fact, it is a very healthy relationship and almost clear of political adversity back home.
I was so desperate for a twist in the tale, in a bold sort of way, that I continued reading but all I got in the end was that the dollar — not greed, not inconsideration, not lack of self-respect or daftness, was the root cause of misery of the characters.
Murty, who, being associated with one of the big IT firms in India, must have closely observed numerous instances of the power of the dollar and how it attracts and affects people. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. I loved the way she depicted both the cultures in the book.

The other beautiful thing is that, Sudha Murty talks about two different cultures India and the US in the book and she gives both the respect they deserve. Gouramma, a person who gives more importance to money rather than value. Yet the message dllar the story, neatly summarised by Shamanna who has never left Indiadoes ring true:. It has become an aspiration for those who want greener and lusher pastures and think that the USA embodies it all.
She regretted her own attitude towards Vinuta. But is it really like that? Jamuna lavishes Surabhi with a lot of sarees at the latter’s wedding, which Vinu is unable to. The murthh do The story is simple but has realistic effect of how value for money than relations affects a family and how it can have its repercussions on relationships The story starts with the POV of Chandru who loves Vinuta.

One of the things about this book that I really liked, was that though Dollar Bahu was not in first-person, it was in an alternating person view, as the thoughts of Vinuta, Gouramma, and to a lesser extent, Chandru, were described vividly.
