Very fast to read with consistent rhyming and amusin I enjoyed “Beastly Tales”.

By the time I had finished writing ‘The Crocodile And the Monkey’, another story and other animals had begun stirring in my mind. The final story, The Elephant and the Tragopan, was my absolute favourite – animals band together and are led by the title characters to lobby humans to save their habitat from a proposed dam. Review A Lot of Pages: If the latter, I highly recommend A Suitable Boy.

You will meet again the tortoise and the hare, and you may recognize the greedy crocodile, but there are other tales with characters not so familiar with strange names and traits, but each with a message that can be comprehended by young and old. Which is why, this quite simply escaped me and in any case, I’m yet to really sink my teeth into any of Vikram Seth’s works.

But a very heavy recommendation by a friend, who insisted that there was possibly no better writer of verse in India than Seth prompted me talex check it out. And some of the things on the reborn tales are issues that are current even today. It’s a cute collection of fables from several different countries – some I’ve heard, others not.

I will read these to my children some day. Quite obviously, as Seth himself says, his decision to write this Jungle book fable was an impulsive one, prompted by a hot, sleepy day. Anr the tales contain wit, wisdom and whimsy in roughly equal measure, with beastyl final one a particular highlight and parable for our times, to be ignored at our peril. From Here and There Limited preview – Poetry is not my cup of tea, but still, one needs to try everything.

The Cat and the Cock. It’s the perfect example of read aloud poetry–funny and intelligent and bouncy–thoroughly enjoyable.

So short that it can easily be read in one quick session and so enjoyable Adapting tales from China, Greece, the Ukraine and his homeland of India, and presenting them in rhyming verse, Vikram Seth has created a small masterpiece of fables for our time. Beastly Tales from Here and There by Vikram Seth

Vikram Seth has written acclaimed books in several genres: His Beastly Tales from Here and There is children’s book consisting of ten stories in verse about animals.

However, the effect and impact wanes a little through the 10 tales and since the last is the longest it felt a little bit of a chore to finish. This is not to say though that there aren’t snippets of brilliance, none more so than Seth’s creative use of meter and rhyme throughout. Some of its stories are very much in the vein of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, which we know was a hard-hitting political allegory.

Jan 21, Ralph Hutchison added it. If The Crocodile And The Monkey thre about the ugliness of greed, The Frog And The Nightingale a personal favourite from the book is a particularly moving story about a nightingale, who loses her voice and her audience, by heeding to the selfish frog’s advice.

I didn’t care much for many of the other fables in the middle portion, which I thought were sort of violent and also repetitive. They took me down memory lane.
